Are your meals shelf-stable?
No. Our meals are made fresh and quickly frozen to lock in nutrition, color, and flavor. We utilize High Pressure Pasteurization (HPP) instead of long periods of high heat (like the baby food in grocery aisles) to maximize nutrition and maintain texture and freshness.
Do older children and adults enjoy Square Meals?
- To that we say: don't knock it 'til you've tried it! It's true...most baby foods at the grocery store are bland and muted. The flavors are uninspiring and unappetizing. Many are high in sugar -- lacking balanced nutrition and are too high in fruit.
- Our meals are dietitian-designed and chef-approved. We've personally developed and taste-tested every recipe. To become a Square Meal, the taste had to be craveable for babies and parents! So, grab some crudité, a pita chip, or a big 'ol spoon and dig in!
- Whether you're a family exploring Baby Led Weaning, have a growing toddler, or are in need of a Soft Food Diet for any reason, our Square Meals are a delicious way to get balanced nutrition.
- Some of our favorite snacking & meal ideas:
- Make a "Beet Berry" a Smoothie: just add a banana, blend and enjoy!
- "Minty Greens" or "Harvest Feast" Dip: these flavorful Square Meals are great as a dip or spread on toast, meat/poultry, etc.
- "Mango Coconut Chicken" or "Almond Butter & Banana" with crackers, toast, or pita chips. Just dip!
- "Apple Curry Chicken" or "Hazelnut Pumpkin Pie" as a sauce over rice, quinoa, or noodles. Yum!

Which proteins are the best for baby’s growth and development?
- The AAP recommends eating a variety of foods, including animal and plant-based proteins for optimal nutrition, important minerals like iron and zinc, and early allergen exposure. Here's a quick look at our list:
- Yogurt (preferably whole milk or Greek, plain) – gut-healthy probiotics, calcium, and Vitamin D
- Beans and Lentils – fiber, iron, and other essential vitamins. Note: lentils are known to be easier to digest and better for younger tummies
- Tofu – for early allergen introduction. Smooth and easy for early bites or blended in purees.
- Quinoa – contains all essential amino acids; a great plant-based protein and whole grain.
- Eggs – great source of choline for brain developments; also for early allergen introduction. Smooth and easy for early bites or blended in purees.
- Meat like Chicken, Turkey, Beef – high in essential minerals such as iron and zinc, which are required for the production of red blood cells and metabolism, respectively.
- Nut Butters – for early allergen introduction. Smooth and easy for early bites or blended in purees.
- Fish – especially fatty fish like salmon, is a great source of protein, omega-3 (called DHA and EPA), omega-6 fats, iron, and choline, which are all important for brain development.
- Read all about why these are the 9 best proteins for baby here.
- At Square Baby, you can choose from whole milk yogurt-based protein ("A" Meals), plant-based protein like beans, lentils, nuts, and legumes ("B" Meals), and animal-based proteins like organic chicken bone broth, beef broth, egg, and soon-to-be-back salmon ("C" Meals).
Does Square Baby offer meals with protein like meat, eggs or fish?
- Yes! One of our favorite questions at Square Baby! In addition to plant-based proteins like green lentils, nuts, and legumes, we currently have Square Meals with organic eggs as well as chicken and beef bone broth. Stay tuned! Our Square Meals made with salmon are coming back soon!
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends introducing meat as an easily-absorbed source of iron & zinc by 4-6 months, especially for breastfed babies. Egg is recommended as "early allergen introduction" as well as other common allergens like peanuts, tree nuts, milk/yogurt, fish, wheat, soy, and shellfish. And Salmon is a rich source of healthy fats -- loaded with omega-3's, which are known for their cognitive/brain and eye development.
- Our premium, fresh protein options are just one delicious and healthy reason that we are different from every other baby food company.
- A few fan favorites (with proteins like chicken, beef, eggs, or fish):
- Apple Curry Chicken

How do I introduce allergens to my baby safely?
- First, consult your pediatrician and/or allergist before introducing solids, including allergens, to your baby.
- Thanks to Landmark research like LEAP and other studies, we now know that introducing allergens "early and often" can help prevent food allergies later in life.
- "Early" = as early as 4-6 months of age.
- "Often" = several exposures per week.
- For an in-depth guide, check out our blog on Introducing Allergens Safely to Your Baby.
What foods are considered allergens?
- The top food allergens, often referred to as the “Big Nine," includes milk, egg, peanuts, tree nuts (like almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, etc), soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, and most recently added to the list, sesame. These are the common foods that most frequently cause allergic reactions in individuals and account for over 90% of allergic reactions.
- There are over 170 other food reported to have caused allergic reactions.
When should I introduce allergens to my baby?
- To help prevent food allergies, the American Academy of Pediatrics generally recommends offering a wide variety of foods including potentially allergenic foods as early as 4-6 months.
- Consult your pediatrician and/or allergist before introducing solids, including allergens – especially if your baby has severe eczema or known food allergies as additional allergy testing is recommended before introducing other allergens. No testing is needed if your baby has mild to moderate eczema.
- For an in-depth guide, check out our blog on Introducing Allergens Safely to Your Baby.
What are the signs of a food allergy?
- It's important to watch for signs of food allergies as you introduce new foods:
- Skin reactions: Hives, redness, or swelling.
- Digestive issues: Vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain.
- Respiratory problems: Wheezing, coughing, or difficulty breathing.
- Severe reactions and anaphylaxis: Difficulty breathing, throat swelling, or a sudden drop in blood pressure.
- If your baby shows any of these signs, stop feeding the food and consult your pediatrician immediately. If they exhibit severe reactions like anaphylaxis -- call 911.
What are the risk factors for developing food allergies?
- Every baby is unique, but here are some common risk factors for food allergies:
- Family History: If you or close family members have allergies, eczema, or asthma, your baby may have a higher risk.
- Eczema: Babies with eczema are more likely to develop food allergies. Managing their skin health is crucial.
- Environmental Factors: Smoke, pollution, and household chemicals can weaken the immune system.
- Vitamin D Deficiency: Low vitamin D levels during pregnancy and infancy may increase the likelihood of allergies.
- Antibiotic Use: Overusing antibiotics can disrupt gut bacteria, which impacts immune system development.
